California is considered the Sunshine State, with pretty much perfect weather all year around. Growing up in California was quite difficult since I was surrounded by beautiful people with the “ideal” body and tanned skin. I was never really accepting of my body or appearances, and I always saw myself as the “ugly duckling” compared to my friends and family. It was probably after I graduated from college that I slowly started to love and really accept myself. It wasn’t realistic for me to compare myself to others or even try to meet that expectation, but I never felt that I was good enough. I accepted the fact that my body isn’t like theirs and probably never will be, and that’s OK with me.
During the summertime, I try to avoid any activities that require me to be in a bikini, such as pool parties and bonfires. I find myself making numerous excuses for why I can’t make it, but in reality I just don’t want to be judged on the way I look in a bikini. My body shape isn’t an hourglass (which is my “ideal” shape), but it’s more apple-shaped than anything. I am top heavy (not in the breast region, but more in my arms and shoulders), which makes it seem like I look bigger than I actually am. This is one of the biggest insecurities that I have to deal with.
This year, I want to make a pledge to myself and really enjoy my summer with a #NOFOMO (No Fear of Missing Out) attitude. I spent so many years feeling this way, so this year I really want to be out there and just have fun with everyone. Living in Los Angeles, I sometimes take the beaches for granted since I live so close to them. I probably only make my way out to the beach once—or sometimes even never—every year. This year, I decided to stop saying “I want to” and really start planning to do so. Take the #NOFOMO pledge with me this summer, and let’s make it a good one!
The first thing I wanted to do for myself was find some cute bikinis to wear. Since my body shape is different and I’m pretty picky with fit, I wanted to try a couple of styles and see what looks flattering on me. In my personal opinion, Target probably has the best swimsuit selections for the price. The selection goes from basic to trendy, and now they offer so many different swim bottoms, from bikini to high-waisted. Finding the perfect fit is now made easier, and Target also offers free shipping and returns. I purchased three styles for you guys to see how they look on. Each set is about $30, and I opted for two-piece bikinis since they looked the most flattering. All of the bikinis that I chose are strapless (since I don’t need the extra support), and I chose a classic black, a bold yellow (which is my favorite), and a fun two-tone color.
